Depression is a very common condition, affecting over 150 million people worldwide. A serious mental health condition, depression can be difficult to treat in some people. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a particularly serious form of the disorder, which refers to cases where standard antidepressant treatments don’t work.
There are a number of potential reasons why traditional antidepressant therapies may not be effective in treating TRD. These antidepressants might not reach all the cells in the brain that need treatment. They might have side effects that make them unacceptable for some patients. Or their effectiveness might be limited by other factors such as age or comorbid conditions.
